Embracing AI: A New Era for Knowledge Workers

As an author who has written travel books, children's stories, and is currently working on a sci-fi novel, I have always been fascinated by the power of imagination and creativity. Recently, I attended a local author convention where I encountered a sign that read, "Stop AI from taking our jobs." This statement made me pause and reflect on the role of AI in our lives, especially in the realm of writing and knowledge work.

Before the advent of AI, knowledge workers had to handle all the intricate tasks of producing and analyzing information, writing documents, and conducting research. Imagine having a grad student assisting you with these tasks. This is what AI essentially represents—a powerful assistant that can augment the work we do.

At the convention, I understood the concerns of fellow authors. AI has the capability to write stories—and good ones at that. This means that someone with no prior experience in writing could, with the help of AI, produce stories at the level of contemporary writers. I could see their point—skills that took years to master and books that took over a year to write could now be matched by AI in a fraction of the time.

However, I was reminded of a time in the past when produce was delivered by horse and cart. Then came the automobile. Did that stop all deliveries? No, the drivers adapted, purchasing specialized vehicles to carry more over longer distances. Why should authors be any different?

I propose that today's authors can augment their skills by utilizing AI to create even better stories. These stories would surpass those written by a layperson using AI alone. Authors can leverage AI to enhance their creativity and productivity. With AI, stories can be written faster, with more depth, and better researched than ever before. With better books, being produced more often, they would be able to reach a larger audience and make more money.

Now, I know that you reading this, you are most likely not an author of books. But, just take this as an opportunity to change your own paradigm. You can, right now, look at what you do on a day to day basis and imagine what more you could be doing or how much better you could do if you embrace AI.
